Multiresolution transforms in modern image and video coding systems

چکیده

This paper presents a brief overview of the multiresolution transform designs used in a few image and video compression systems, namely H.264, PTC (progressive transform coder), and JPEG2000. The first two use hierarchical transforms, and the third uses wavelet transforms. We review the basis constructions for the hierarchical transforms, and compare some of their characteristics with those of wavelet transforms. In terms of compression performance as measured by peak-signal to noise ratio, H.264 provides the best performance, but at much higher computational complexity. In terms of visual quality, the multiresolution transforms provide an improvement over block (single resolution) transforms.

Region Completion in a Texture using Multiresolution Transforms

Abstract Natural images, textures and photographs are likely to be impaired by stains.  As a result a substantial portion of the image remains blurred. However, a method called region completion is adopted to fill in the tainted part by using the information from the portion left unblemished by stains. A novel method to perform this operation is proposed in this paper. The three significant sta...

Contourlet-Based Edge Extraction for Image Registration

Image registration is a crucial step in most image processing tasks for which the final result is achieved from a combination of various resources. In general, the majority of registration methods consist of the following four steps: feature extraction, feature matching, transform modeling, and finally image resampling. As the accuracy of a registration process is highly dependent to the fe...

Scalable Image and Video Coding Using Wavelet Decomposition

Wavelet transforms are multiresolution decompositions that can be used to analyze signals and images. The wavelet representation is inherently hierarchical, making it an excellent choice for building scalable codecs. In this report, we address the compression of still and moving images using wavelet-based methods. The discussion will be centered on two issues: performance evaluation and multire...

Wavelet and Fractal Transforms for Image Compression

The main idea behind all fractal coding algorithms is to exploit the similarities present within many natural images: one block of an image is represented by an affine transform of another larger block taken from the image itself [1, 2, 3]. The characteristic property of fractal coders is to exploit similarities between different scales. Wavelet transforms perform multiresolution decompositions...

Wavelet-Based Fractal Transforms for Image Coding with No Search

The compression performance of fractal image coding is considered using the wavelet-based fractal coder with no search or classi cation of the domain blocks. A new partitioning scheme is introduced as a variant of earlier schemes which further improves the compression performance. The Wavelet-Based Fractal Transform (WBFT) links the theory of multiresolution analysis (MRA) with iterated functio...
